3D Photographs, when apprehended in the best way for the viewer, convey the sense of depth in a more enhanced way than 3D Moving Images because they may be studied at the viewer's convienience.
Advertisers know this creates enhanced 'dwell time' for the viewer in front of 3D images.
This is because Stereoscopic /Anaglyph 3D is apprehended, quite literally, in the viewer's mind's eye!
This phenomena underpins the immersive aspect of 3D, creating more than just pictures, but compositions which become an experience of scenes or moments in time for the viewer!
If you are new to looking at 3D Photographs (also known as Stereo pairs / Autostereoscopic Pairs /Side-by-side Stereo Pairs, etc) then you'll notice upto three different formats of the same scene.
Animated Gif
(Autostereoscopic) Side-by-side Cross View
(Dubois) Anaglyph for Red/Cyan Coloured Glasses
Animated Gif Format
Problems viewing the 'movement'
in the Animated Gifs can usually be solved by switching to another web browser from 'Explorer'.
The Animated Pictures shown are the combination of the Left & Right images of the 3D photograph(s) taken.
The Animated Gifs shown here give an impression of depth as though the viewer were moving from side to side, so in this respect it is 'Pirate Friendly' 3D. The parallax depth cues associated with movement may be apprehended using only one eye. In real life we naturally move our heads from side to side to ascertain which objects in our view are in front or behind of each other to gauge relative distance/depth in the scene from the viewer (Parallex apprehension).
(Autostereoscopic) Side-by-side Stereo Pair Format for Cross Freeviewing
Autostereoscopic Side-by-Side Stereo Pairs for Cross Freeviewing (ie without glasses) is a format that promotes the full-colour image for the individuals capable of Cross Freeviewing: like the Title '3D Video Leeds' Banner at the top of this page.
Ways of seeing Side-By-Side 3D Photos are described in the cross-eyed section of the Free-viewing entry given by Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereoscopy#Freeviewing
The following explanation is less wordy while trying to convey the correct information:
The Side-by-side images (on this site) are the Left & Right eye views in the format for Cross (Eyed) Freeviewing... the images, when viewed in a cross-eyed way show all the aspects of depth recorded in the scene in full colour with no need for glasses! <- not everyone can do it, and it takes a bit of practice to acquire the ability to do it easily if it has not been done before, and obviously: break off if discomfort is encountered.
It is different from the 'Magic Eye' Stereograms (which were a popular trend some years back) in the following ways:
1/ The whole of the L/R images must be successfully overlapped, rather than just a portion, by voluntary control of the eye muscles. The most popular format with Side-by side stereo pairs is
'Cross-eyed' and not the Magic Eye way of viewing which is 'Wall' or 'Parallel-eyed'
2/ The combined (confusingly named) 'Cyclopean image' is therefore apprehended in the mind's eye is in full colour, with 'ghosted' images to either side: the 'revealed' content of the picture is the contained depth aspects of the scene and usually no hidden abstract image.
Note: Leeds Roller Dolls & 'Trick or Treat?' pictures below were sampled and assembled from Stills taken from Video.
